What Does My First Pelvic Floor Appointment Look Like
Starting pelvic floor therapy can feel intimidating, especially if you’re not sure what to expect. Many women walk into their first session feeling nervous or unsure.
At Women’s Pelvic Health & Wellness, your first session is about listening, education, and creating a plan together.
Before you even arrive
There’s no need to prepare. You don’t need to “practice” exercises, shave, or wear anything special. Wear clothes you’re comfortable moving in, and bring yourself exactly as you are. Your children are always welcome.
Step one: gather information
Your first session begins with time to talk. We’ll discuss your health history, symptoms, goals, and what brought you in. This is also your chance to ask questions, share concerns, or talk through any fears you may have.
Step two: understanding your body
Education is a big part of your visit. We’ll talk about how the pelvic floor works with your breath, core, hips, and movement, and how that relates to what you’re experiencing. Often, just knowing what’s happening in your body changes everything.
Step three: the physical assessment (only if you’re comfortable)
I always start with a physical assessment of how your body is moving and working as a whole, including posture, breathing, the hips, back, and abdomen. If appropriate and with your full consent, we may also include an internal pelvic floor assessment. This allows us to assess the pelvic floor muscles, breathing patterns, and pelvic floor coordination.
An internal assessment is one of the best ways to understand what’s happening in the pelvic floor, but it is not the only option. You never have to do an internal assessment, and consenting one day does not mean you’re committing to it in future sessions.
Everything is explained ahead of time, and you are always in control. You can say no, ask to stop at any point, or choose to focus solely on education, movement, and external work.
Step four: gentle treatment and a plan forward
Depending on your needs, your first session may include gentle hands-on work, guided movement, breathing strategies, or simple exercises. You’ll leave with a clearer understanding of your body and a plan that feels manageable.
A few important things to know
It’s normal to feel a little sore or emotionally tired afterward; this is usually temporary
Progress isn’t linear
Your comfort, safety, and goals always come first
You’re not alone in this
Pelvic floor therapy is not about fixing a “broken” body. It’s about reconnecting with your body, building confidence in movement, and having support through seasons like pregnancy, postpartum, and beyond.
Your body deserves this next step
